Alfred Al Hofer, 80, of State Center, Iowa, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa. Funeral services for Alfred will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in State Center, Iowa. Visitation for Al will be held from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home West Marshall Chapel, in State Center. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Al and his family. Al was born July 4, 1932, the son of Ben and Loretta (Emhoff) Hofer. Al was united in marriage to the love of his life, Iona Couch, on March 22, 1953, in Mingo, Iowa, at the First Methodist Church on a beautiful sunny day. Al and Iona were married for 60 years. He was a hardworking man and even the last few days Al was with us, when someone would ask him any hobbies he enjoyed doing, his answer was always work. Al was a lifetime farmer, and a Jack of all trades. He tended dairy cattle for 7 years, and raised cattle, sheep. Al also drove a school bus for 9 years and after retiring, Al took care of 14 lawns. Al was a member of the Marshalltown Square Dance Club, Crew Lanes Bowling League, and Saddle Club, and was also a First Responder. Al had a passion for family and work of any kind. He enjoyed westerns, including actors John Wayne and Clint Eastwood; He was a wood worker and was an avid bowler. Al is survived by his wife of 60 years, Iona; children: Ronald (Elaine) Hofer, Earl (Kathy) Hofer and Lorica Hofer; grandchildren: DeNae Warren, Nathan (Shannon) Hofer, Amber Grantz, Nicholas Hofer, Danille Hofer, Trey Hofer, Jeff Holt, Tim Holt, Jenny (Kenny) Herbert, Jamie Andrews, and Kelly Andrews; 20 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Ben (Betty) Hofer; Bradleys wife and caregiver, Lynda. Al was preceded in death by one son, Bradley; one daughter, Carol; one grandchild, Kelly; three brothers: John, Paul and Sam; two sisters: Rose and Marian; two step brothers: Clarence and Lewis; and two step sisters: Helen and Bertha.
