Alfred Al Kibler Nelson, 86, of Marshalltown, died on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Memorial services celebrating Als life will be held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2008. There will be a time of refreshments and fellowship following the memorial services at the funeral home. Interment in the Riverside Cemetery will follow the fellowship time. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice. He received his education in the Fairfield, Iowa area and went on to college at Iowa State University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Al married Wilma J. Preston on March 15, 1944 in Ames, Iowa. Al served our country proudly in the Air Force during World War II. He flew with the 466th Bomb Group in the German Theatre. During their married life, the couple lived in Iowa, Illinois, Washington, and moved to Marshalltown (Embers) in 1990. They had two children, Marilyn Jean and Donald Lee. Al started his career at Caterpillar in the Peoria area in 1947. He worked as an engineer there for 37 years, retiring in 1984. Al was a member of the Pit Tau Sigma honorary fraternity for mechanical engineers. Al enjoyed traveling with his5th-wheel trailer, wintering in Texas with Wilma, fishing in Minnesota and Canada, and HAM Radio. Left to honor Als life are: his daughter, Marilyn Jean (Robert) Palmer of Marshalltown; grandsons, Jim (Rachel) Palmer of Marshalltown, Wes (Lucia) Palmer of Lake Zurich, Il; great-grandson Nicholas Palmer; and great-granddaughters McKaylee, Jadyn, and Isabella Palmer.Al was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, son Donald Lee in infancy, brother Bill Nelson, two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
