Carl Becvar

Carl R. Becvar ,Age 98 formerly of Marshalltown, IA Died Sunday, March 20th, in Roseville, MN, where he had been residing for the last 3 months, due to failing health. He was born in 1917 in Marshalltown, IA., the 1st child of Joe and Goldie (nee Lant) Becvar, later Sheldon. He graduated from Marshalltown High School, and attended Central Iowa Business College. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 1st, 1941, and was injured at Fondouk, North Africa in World War II on April 8, 1943, receiving a Purple Heart while serving in the infantry. His Army service continued for more than 4 years, 26 months of it serving overseas. He was honorably discharged from the Army in August of 1945. On March 14th, 1947, He married Iona Marie Deedrick. Together, they had one son, Richard Becvar. Carl worked for Lennox Industries for 45 years as an industrial and cost-accounting engineer, first at the Marshalltown facility, and then in 1976 moving to Texas to work at the Carrollton Lab, where he retired in his early 70s. He enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball, reading mystery stories, and listening to his big band music. He moved to Minnesota in March 2009 to be near his family. Besides his wife Iona, who passed in November of 1967, he was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jim Corwin. Left to honor Carl, are his son Dick and wife Juleen, 3 grandchildren; Jennifer, Brian and Scott Becvar, and 3 great-grandchildren; Jordan, Toby, and Honor Becvar, and one sister, Pat (Roger) Sievers of Gladbrook, as well as 4 nieces. The family will greet friends from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on March 23rd at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Ave. West, Marshalltown, Ia. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 AM Thursday, March 24th at the Central Christian Church, 300 West Main. St., Marshalltown, Ia. Burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors following the service. Memorials in honor of Carl, may be made to the Central Christian Church, where he was a member.
