Charles "Bill" Buchwald

Charles William “Bill” Buchwald, 92 of Glenwood Place in Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the Iowa River Hospice Home, with his loving family around him. Bill had an 11 year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, January 5, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A Rosary will follow the visitation. Military Honors will be provided by the combined VFW/ American Legion Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be direct to Marshalltown Girls Basketball Club at 1908 Edgebrook Drive, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Charles William “Bill” Buchwald was born on July 8, 1925, in Marshalltown, Iowa, in the family home; he was the son of John Robert and Margaret (Burns) Buchwald. Bill attended St. Mary’s High School in Marshalltown and graduated with the Class of 1943. He served his country honorably as a medic from 1943 until 1946 in the United States Navy and Marines, and from 1951 until 1952 in the United States Air Force. Bill was united in marriage to Mary Louise Grimes on July 12, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They had resided in Marshalltown their entire lives. Bill worked for 42 1/2 years in the Tin Shop and Cabinet Shop at Lennox Industries. He was a member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church, American Legion, and the UAW 893 in which he had been Union Steward. Bill enjoyed golf, walking, traveling, watching sports, and loved his Iowa State Cyclones. Left to cherish his memory is his daughters, Gail Miller of Urbandale, Iowa, and Donna (Tracy Fultz) Buchwald of Ames, Iowa; grandchildren, Rich (Charity) Miller of Adel, Iowa, Megan (Sean) Heitmann of Marshalltown, Iowa, and step-grandchildren, Aaron (Noelle) Fultz of Ames, Iowa, and Shannon (Phil) Hingst of Sueyville, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Avery, Rhyan and Ty Miller, Millie and Eliot Heitmann, and step-great-grandchildren, Jackson Steburg, and Andrew, Russel, and Heather Hingst; brothers, Robert (Alberta) Buchwald of Hollister, Missouri, and David (Carole) Buchwald of Tucson, Arizona. In death Bill rejoins his parents, John and Margaret; wife of almost 50 years, Mary Louise; and special friend, Roberta “Bertie” Allan.
