Born December 13, 1956 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dan was the third of four children born to Glen John and Margaret Elaine (Mitchell) Pruess. He grew up on a farm in Clarence, Iowa and graduated from Clarence-Lowden High School in 1975. Dan went on to obtain an Associate’s Degree from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).
Shortly after meeting Nancy Countryman, the couple was united in marriage on December 20, 1980. They lived in several communities throughout Iowa, including Winfield and Waukon, before settling in Marshalltown in 1998. After growing up on the family farm, Dan had a love for agriculture that led him to a lifelong career in agronomy. His dedication to agriculture continued after retirement through a variety of independent contracting jobs. In his younger years he and Nancy enjoyed touring on a Goldwing motorcycle. This hobby was soon replaced by raising a loving family, which was his true pride and joy.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 43 years, Nancy; two children: Christopher (Katherine) Pruess and Sonia (Chris) Baker; six grandchildren: Thomas, Nolan, William and Megan Pruess and Addyson and Alyse Baker; sisters-in-law Carol (Dave) Bradley, Judy Pruess and Anita Pruess; brothers-in-law David Countryman and Jim Trcka; and his nieces and nephews: Ben (Jess) Pruess, Adam (Erica) Pruess, Renae Pruess, John Pruess, Erin (Ty) Surber, Autumn (Jarrod) Moss, Dale (Rebecca) Turner II and James Turner.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Margaret; siblings: David, Dennis and Molly Pruess; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Grace Countryman; and sister-in-law Camellia Trcka.
