He was raised and educated in Grundy Center and graduated with the Grundy Center Class of 1985. On June 13, 1987, he married Penny Stickley. To that marriage, a daughter, Courtney, was born. Dennis later married June Putnam. He was currently married to Brenda Wolf- Porter. Dennis was employed for many years at the Spokesman Press in Grundy Center. After relocating to Marshalltown, he was then employed with Get N Go gas station. During his free time, he loved watching football and movies. He was one of the biggest Iowa Hawkeye fans you could ever meet (as required of all members of the family by his father). As much as he loved his Hawkeyes, he also loved the New England Patriots. Dennis also enjoyed spending time with his daughter. Dennis will forever be missed by his mother, Dorothy Porter, of Marshalltown; his daughter, Courtney, and her mother Penny, of Grundy Center; wife, Brenda, and her children, of Washburn; sister, Kathy Robinson, of Marshalltown; nieces and nephews: Brandon Raske, Shannon (Greg) Lacey, Angie Robinson, and Carrie (Kyle) Kroeger, all of Marshalltown, and Todd Robinson, of Phoenix, Arizona, (all of whom will fondly remember him as "Uncle Ding-Dong", though none of them can recall why); as well as his great nieces and nephews. Dennis is rejoicing to be reunited in death with his father, Edgar Porter; his sister, Diana Raske; and special friend, June Putnam.
