Dennis “Potsy” Pothast, 70, of Melbourne, Iowa, passed away on the afternoon of Thursday, February 23, 2023 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by his family.
A celebration of life for Dennis will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family to establish a memorial education fund for his grandchildren who meant the world to him. Dennis Charles Pothast was born February 24, 1952 to parents Ronald and Anna Marie (Goff) Pothast in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was one of five children in his family. Dennis attended school in VanCleave and later graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1970.
After meeting at The Spot in Marshalltown, Dennis was united in marriage to the love of his life Mary Daily on September 6, 1991 in Marshalltown, Iowa. Together they made their home in Melbourne, Iowa where they raised their four children. Dennis was a hard worker and had a 43 year career with Fisher Controls in Marshalltown. Throughout the years he worked in various departments including Bar Stock and Cycle Counting. Dennis retired in 2012.
In his free time, Dennis enjoyed golfing, bowling, mowing his lawn, playing softball in younger years, and going to the sprint car races in Knoxville with his family. He was a proud member of the UAW Local 893 of Marshalltown. Most of all he was proud of his family and their accomplishments, cheering on his children and grandchildren during their sporting events. Altogether his family was his life.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 31 years, Mary Pothast; his children, Brittany and husband Victor Corral, Brooke Pothast, Kathleen Pothast, and Victoria Pothast; his grandchildren, Jackson Pothast and Charli Newborn; his furry grandchildren, Rambo, Remi, Roux, Anna Mae and Bailey; his siblings, Ronald “Fred” and wife Barb Pothast and Margaret Tiernan; alongside nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ronald and Anna Marie Pothast; his brothers, Bill Pothast and Doug Pothast; his paternal and maternal grandparents; and his mother-in-law Virginia Daily.
