Edith B. Pothast, age 94, of Melbourne, Iowa passed away on Thursday December 26, 2024, at the Willows of Marshalltown, surrounded by her loving family.
A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home of Marshalltown. Pastor Doug Van Wey will be officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation one hour prior to the service, also at the funeral home. There will be a time for food and fellowship following the service. Edith will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in Melbourne. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. Edith Beatrice (Gummert) Pothast was born July 4, 1930, in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was the daughter of Guy and Fern (Dudley) Gummert. On September 11, 1954, Edith married the love of her life, Kenneth “Kenny” Pothast at the farmhouse which was their first home together. Edith held several jobs in her working career, such as being a laborer at Marshall Manufacturing and a nurse’s aide at the Marshalltown Hospital. The most important and most satisfying titles that she held was that of mother, grandmother aka “GG”, wife, and homemaker. She was a very active member of the Senior Citizen Center here in Marshalltown. In her free time Edith enjoyed fishing, crocheting, painting, baking, listening to music, playing the guitar and the piano. Edith also loved to dance with her sisters, and she was known as a very good dancer.
She is survived by her children: Carol Best (Randy), Cheryl Davenport (James Jr.), James Pothast (Terri), Julie Giannetto (Randy), and Danny Pothast (Linda); her eight grandchildren: Carissa Hatling(Arnie), Brad Best (Natalia), Jennifer Eubanks (Don Brady), Adam Davenport (Lindsay), Ryan Pothast, Shayla Edwards (Trevor), AJ Giannetto (Caitlin), and Angela (Andrew Potter); her 17 great- grandchildren: Garrett, Morgan, Henry, Ivy, Kaylee, Jenna, Peyton, Cole, Dirk, Alexis, Jarrett, Gabby (Willy Lemasters), Braydon, Savannah, Mady, Oaklee, and Grace.
Edith is preceded in death by her husband Kenny; her parents Guy and Fern; her sons: Kenny Duane and Andrew Guy, grandson-in-law Scott Eubanks, granddaughter-in-law Jamie Giannetto, her seven sisters and many more.
