Eugene McDowell, 68, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Central Iowa Healthcare in Marshalltown, Iowa. A memorial gathering will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Eugene Paul McDowell was born on May 19, 1947, in Kearney, Nebraska; he was the son of Clarence and Grace (Jurgenson) McDowell. Gene attended school in the Nebraska City High School. Gene served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1968 until 1978. On August 29, 1969, Gene was united in marriage to Anong Chaiyan in Bangkok,Thailand. They moved to Marshalltown in 1978, where Gene worked for Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown for 25 years, and after leaving there, he worked for Marshalltown Community School District driving a bus for 10 years. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church. Gene enjoyed fishing, drawing and trains. Left to cherish his memory is, his wife of 46 years, Anong McDowell, and daughter, Wachara (Dennis) Herink of Ankeny, Iowa; Grandchildren, Travis (Nickie) Herink, Shelby Herink and Mindy Herink; and great-grandchild, Blakely Nicole Straight. Siblings, Bill (Jan) McDowell of Sedalia, Missouri; David McDowell of Texas; Wayne (Chong) McDowell of Indianapolis, Indiana; Gail (Maxine) McDowell of Muscatine, Iowa; Rachel (Terry) Stephenson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Ruth (Ralph) Breading of South Dakota. In death, Gene rejoins his parents, Clarence and Grace, and siblings, Richard and Twila McDowell.
