Floyd Eugene Hackbarth, 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 15, 2010. He was born May 5, 1930 to Floyd and Juanita (King)Hackbarth. After graduation from Popejoy High School, Floyd attended Ellsworth Community College and graduated from Iowa State while pitching for the Cyclone baseball team. Upon graduation in 1953, Floyd was commissioned into the U.S. Army. He spent 20 years in the Army, retiring in 1973 as a Lt. Colonel. He served one tour of Korea and two tours of Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. Floyd is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce (Hurd)Hackbarth, a son, Lee (Tracy) of Ames, a son, Mike (Claire) of North Carolina, a daughter, Julie (Rick) Pickerill of Kansas, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Floyd is also survived by a sister, Virginia (Bill) White of Colorado, and a sister, Nancy (Paul) Gish of Colorado. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gus. After cremation, Floyd's ashes will be interred at the Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter at a later date.
