Frances (Mrs. Wendell) Powers, 72, of LeGrand, died Wednesday night, June 30th, at the Bright Kavanagh House on Easton Blvd. in Des Moines. Her death came peacefully at 9:43 p.m. with her loving family at her side and dog Dottie at her feet. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 6th, at the LeGrand Friends Church with Pastor Alan Mullikin officiating. She will be laid to rest in the LeGrand Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials may be directed to the family. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph 641-844-1234. Born Frances Lorraine Atcher on October 15th, 1937, in Marshall County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Waldo and Dorothy (Ridout) Atcher. She graduated from the Montour High Schools Class of 1955. During summer band camp, she met the young Wendell Powers from Montour. The two were united in marriage on May 12th, 1956, at the Montour Methodist Church. They made their home in San Francisco one year while he served our country honorably in the US Marine Corps. and later returned to the area, living in LeGrand since 1961. Frances was employed at J.C. Penneys, Marshalltown Instruments and retired from Wolfe Eye Clinic in 2002. She was a member of the LeGrand Friends Church, LeGrand Lioness Club and the Tuesday Music and Literary Club. Frances will be fondly remembered for her love of family, motorcycling, camping, gardening, celebrating the holidays, and traveling.Left to cherish her memory are Wendell, her loving husband of 54 years, four daughters: Sue Waters of Ankeny and sons Matthew (Tasha) and Adam; Deb (Dave) Velner of Des Moines, Linda Powers of Windsor Heights and Brenda (John Mac) McDonald of Newton and their children Elizabeth, Brett, Stuart, Johanna and Charlene; brother Charles Atcher of Laurel and sisters Loretta Werner of Toledo and Helen Short in Missouri, her dog Dottie who came into her life on her 70th birthday as well as several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.In death, she rejoined her parents, son-in-law Mark Waters and sister Edna Mae in infancy.
