George Bud William Kunch Jr., 85, of Garwin, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Visitation for Bud will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St Patricks Catholic Church in Tama. Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time. George Kunch Jr. was born on October 15, 1931 in Tama County to George Kunch Sr. and Marie Fredricks. He graduated from Tama High School in 1949. Bud served his country honorably in the United States Navy until his honorable discharge in August of 1955. On February 9, 1956, Bud was united in marriage to Kathryn Kearney at the ICC Church in Clutier, Iowa. They lived in Clutier for 4 years before calling Garwin home. Bud retired as a janitor from the Green Mountain Garwin school district in 2005. He was a member of the St Patricks Catholic Church in Tama as well as the Garwin American Legion and served on the Garwin City Council for 4 years. Bud was a jack of all trades whether it was building airplanes for his great grandsons or jewelry boxes for his granddaughters. He was an avid animal lover and tended to his chickens and llamas. Bud also enjoyed working in his garden, playing his guitar and listening to Hank Williams Sr. and going to his childrens and grandchildrens activities. Bud is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn. Children: Carol Ann (Wayne) Dvorak of Garwin, Karen (Steve) Boege of Garwin, Linda (Darrell) Novotny of Garwin, Mary Jane (Roger) Beall of Marshalltown, Michael Kunch of Garwin and Valerie Claassen of Garwin. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren with one on the way and siblings: Richard (Ruth) Kunch of Marshalltown, Betty (Al) Guldhammer of Sioux City and his schnauzer Molly. Bud is preceded in death by his parents George Sr. and Marie, three sisters, his granddaughter Melissa and his horse, Old Joe.
