George Edward Kouba

George Edward Kouba, 90, of rural Garwin, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, under the care of his family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services for George will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Public visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until services at 11:00 a.m. where his family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be directed in Georges name to his family. For further information or to send a condolence please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call (641) 844-1234. George was born on August 17th, 1923, in rural Garwin to Peter and Velma (Lamar) Kouba. He graduated from LeGrand High School in 1941. He served with the Army Air Corps in India and Burma from 1943 to 1947. After his military service he worked as a county assessor and farmed until 1962. He then worked various construction and golf course positions prior to his retirement. George and Doris Hammond were united in marriage on December 13th,1947. Six children were born to this union. Following the dissolution of his first marriage, on August 22, 1980, George married Joyce Kurth. George loved all things outdoors, especially golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening, cutting and splitting wood and family. Having played catcher for the Anson semi-pro baseball team, sports remained one of his avid interests. When indoors and not watching sports, playing cards was one of his favorite pastimes. George was a member of the American Legion, Wandering Creek and Tama Toledo County Clubs. In addition to a host of friends, nieces and nephews, he will be missed by his sisters: Marion Otta, Frances Howard and Evelyn Bruster as well as his cousin, Linda Dunn. Brothers-in-law: Galen Kurth and Phil Blink, sister-in-law: Kathy Bushbom. His Children: Kitty Choate, Marshalltown, Patricia Kouba, Marshalltown, Daniel (Kathy) Kouba, Melborne, Sally (Scott) Randall, Marshalltown and Jennifer Kouba, Marshalltown, daughter-in-law: Debra Kouba, Tama. Doris Kouba, mother of his children. 17 Grand children and 20 Great-Grand children. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his wife Joyce Kouba, son Timothy Kouba, stepdaughter, Chrysse Grothe, son-in-law, Perry Choate, grandson Nathan Kouba, great-granddaughter Chloey Kline and his brothers Carl and Wayne.
