Gladys May Boldt

Gladys May Boldt passed away on April 27th, 2018, in Jasper, Georgia, at the age of 100.      She was born in Marshaltown, Iowa on March 15th, 1918, The third child of Walter and Lillie (Frost) Thorn. In 1950 she married Noel Boldt and they spent their entire married life in and around Gladbrook, Iowa.      She was preceeded in death by both of her parents, three brothers: Clifford, Cecil and Richard Thorn. And two sisters: Evelyn Thorn and Helen Meyers. Her beloved husband Noel and two sons: Larry Russell and Wally Russell.      Left to mourn her passing are two sons: Raymond Russell and Dennis Russell, and a daughter: Janice Ege. Plus 17 grandchildren and numerous great, great great and two great great great grandchildren. Very special friends: Jerry and Cathy Lisk, plus many other family and friends.      Gladys lived thru the great depression of the 20s and 30s. During WWII, 1942-1944, she worked at Mare Island, California where they repaired damaged ships.  But she lived most of her life in Marshaltown and Gladbrook, Iowa. She loved to garden and grew fruits and vegetable, she then canned and froze them to see her family thru the Iowa winters. She loved to cook, read books, play cards, play Bingo and bowl ( but had to quit at age 80 when her fingers got too crooked from arthritis).  She crocheted throws and small blankets for friends and family. She was an avid fisherman and was still going to dances at age 80. She had a photographic memory and could remember happenings, times, places and people as far back as age three. She baby sat, cleaned homes, took in ironing and worked in the cafeteria of a local hospital for 11 years starting at age 54, when Noel had a stroke and couldn't work anymore. She took all the hardships she suffered in her life, and turned them into determination to make her life better. And instead of getting bitter, she did good to those who misused her. She was a perfectionist, and at age 95, when she could no longer keep her apartment totally clean , she went into the Grandview Nursing Center in Jasper, Ga, where she lived until her death. She will be greatly missed.      There will be a memorial service at the Tate Methodist Church in Tate Georgia on Wednesday, May 2, at two pm, with burial in Gladbrook, Iowa at a later date.
