Herb Squire, 74, of Green Mountain, was called home to his Savior and Lord early in the morning of January 17th, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 22nd, at the Green Mountain United Church of Christ with Rev. Kim Wilson officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Green Mountain Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A memorial fund is being established. Born on April 11th, 1935, in Waterloo, he was one of two children born to Bert and Grace (Wikle) Squire. At the age of five, his family moved to Green Mountain. He graduated from Green Mountain High Schools Class of 1953. Herb enlisted in the Army National Guard and was stationed for a short time in California. On the way to basic training on a Greyhound Bus, he caught the eye of a young June Kalsem of Kelley, Iowa. The two soon became a couple and were united in marriage on September 14th, 1958 in Kelley. The couple farmed at Green Mountain on his family farm he helped with after his fathers death when he was 19. He also custom farmed near LeGrand and Albion in the late 1970s. Herb was awarded a yield contest award for producing 180 bushels an acre of corn- 30 years ago. He also was employed by Johnny Vajgrt doing heavy equipment machinery operating between crops in the summer. At the time of his death, he was driving semi- a career he began in 1990. He made friends all over the US on his routes. Mr. Squire will also be fondly remembered for his participation in the farmers markets local and in Des Moines, a man of his word and an honest, hard-working man. Mr. Squire was a member of the Green Mountain UCC, the Green Mountain volunteer fire department, a former Green Mountain School Board member, Cattlemans Association, , 4-H, Marshall County Fair Association, and Full Gospel Business Men International. Left to cherish his memory are June, his loving wife of 51 years, five children whom he loved and supported in their independence: Mark (Brenda) Squire of Ft. Bragg/Fayetteville, NC, Bert Squire (Sherry Cope) of Green Mountain, Annette (John) Sanborn of Murrieta, CA, Margaret Squire of Boston, Mass, and Clint (Cindy) Squire of Riverside, CA, six precious grandchildren: Tyler, Alisha and Nathaniel Sanborn; Olivia, Hannah and Zander Squire and his only sister, Joyce Miller of Des Moines. In death he has rejoined his parents.
