Irene Grimes, 90, of Marshalltown, died Saturday, February 9th, at the Villa del Sol where she has resided since August. Her death came peacefully with her family at her side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 13th, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dale Batcheler officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 4-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the church. Ph 641-844-1234.Born Irene Genevieve Peterson on February 27th, 1917, near the communities of Dunbar and Gilman, Iowa, she was the daughter of Gilbert C. and Julia Ann (Shelley) Peterson. She graduated from the Gilman High School in 1933 and Cornell College in 1937. The following year, on November 25th, 1938, she was united in marriage to L. Orville Grimes in Gilman. They resided in Marshalltown and at 313 North 15th Street for 56 years until moving to their apartment on Nicholas Drive. Orville passed away in September of 1997. Mrs. Grimes was a school teacher for LeGrand and New Providence and later taught piano. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past president of the UMW, Tuesday Musical Club, Lioness, PEO Chapter JU, and the Central Iowa Ornithologists. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Cynthia Thomas of Marshalltown, her son Geoffrey (Vicki) Grimes of Waterloo, five grandchildren: Lori (Larry) Stabenow of Liscomb, Heather (Lance) Pfaff of Holland, Ohio, Carrie (Greg) Godfrey of Cedar Rapids, Tiffani (Ryan) Siegel of Chicago, and Ryan Grimes of Minneapolis, and six great-grandchildren: Ashley Stabenow, Damien Pfaff, Christian Pfaff, Allyson Stabenow, Aaron Thomas and Cameron Pfaff. In death she has rejoined her beloved Orville, son-in-law Ron Thomas (1994), brother Raymond Peterson and her parents.
