James M. 'Dell' Heaverlo

March 22, 1925 — July 25, 2014

James M. Dell Heaverlo, 89, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, July 25, 2014. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 1:00 3:00 p.m. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Dell and his family. For more information, please visit www.mitchellfh.com, or call 641-844-1234. Dell was born in Arnolds Park, Iowa on March 22, 1925 to parents, James Adams Heaverlo and Yula Phyllis (Miller) Heaverlo. Following graduation from Jackson High School in Jackson, Minnesota he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in WWII in the Pacific on an LCS Ship as a radio operator. On November 2, 1958 he married Charlotte Ann Johnson at The Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa. Dell was a gifted mechanic and worked alongside his father at the "Heaverlo Repair Shop" in Jackson, Minnesota. He was very active in the Jackson Speedway from being co-owner of the Flimsy 5, to running the wrecker. He and his dad built a quarter midget racer and had a lot of fun at the track. The family moved to Marshalltown in 1967. Dell retired from Maytag in Newton on May 27, 1992. He enjoyed semi-retirement working at Kapaun and Brown. He enjoyed NASCAR, camping, motorcycles, traveling, square dancing, and ISU Girls Basketball. He was able to go on an Honor Flight to Washington DC on August 19, 2010. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 55 years; Charlotte Ann Heaverlo, daughter, Candace (Jon) Degraff of Van Horne, Iowa; son, Thomas (Joely King) Heaverlo of Gilman, Iowa; grandchildren: Jami (Josh) Baas of Rockwell City, Iowa; Holly (Mike Strydom) Otto of Waverly, Iowa; Nichole (Nick Stonewall) Heaverlo of Garwin, Iowa; Brandon (Stevi Salzmann) Otto of Tiffin, Iowa; step grandchildren: Jamison Brus and Jordan King both of Gilman, Iowa; six great grandchildren: Jackson and Jude Baas, Tennant and Noah Strydom, Landon and Jocee Stonewall, brother; Lewis A. Heaverlo of Phoenix, Arizona; niece, Marsha (Jim) Thompson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; nephews, Steve (Laurie Danforth) Heaverlo of Helena, Montana; and Kent (Mary) Heaverlo of Wausau, Wisconsin. Dell was preceded in death by his parents, James and Yula Heaverlo; and his sister-in-law, Caryll Heaverlo.
