Born on March 24, 1938, at Montour, he was the third child born to Acil and Norma (Roseland) Kellogg. We was a very proud Class Valedictorian of the Dunbar High School. As soon as he graduated, he joined his father in farming now marking 60 years of his love of the land. When one would think of Jay, most would remember him as a true friend. He loved his family and farming. No one ever questioned where he stood on a subject he tended to be somewhat opinionated. Jay was active in his lifetime as a 4-H leader, sports enthusiast and making people laugh and smile. He was passionate about showing cattle from local Tama Country to the Iowa State Fair. Jays legacy will live on as the creator of the Bottle Calf program at the county fair levels- now a program adopted across the country. He served as Beef Superintendent for Tama County and assistant Beef Superintendent for the Iowa State Fair and enjoyed the steer show at the state fairgrounds. For over 40 years, he was a member of his poker group and also solved the worlds problems at the elevator in LeGrand. On March 31, 1962, he was united in marriage to Janet Hill in Kirksville, Missouri. They made their home at Montour on the farm ever since their marriage to which three sons were born- Heath, Kyle and Brody. Left to cherish his memory are Janet, his loving wife of 51 years, his sons: Heath (Lana) Kellogg of Toledo and their children Bailey, Cody and Cael; Brody Kellogg (Lisa Tichy) of rural Marshalltown, his siblings- Doris (David) Paul of Gilman, Darlene Peterson of Melbourne, Deanna (Lauren) Paxton of Montezuma, Jo Ella (George) Courter of Galesburg, IL., Don (LaVerna) Kellogg of Montour, and Ken (Susan) Kellogg of Montour, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In death, he rejoined his parents, Acil and Norma, his son, Kyle David, and his brother-in-law, Virgil Peterson.
