Mary Carmichael, 92, of Toledo, died Sunday, February 3rd, at her home.Her funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 8, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Tama then laid to rest in the St. Patricks Cemetery. Ph. 641-844-1234.Born Mary Francis McCaffrey on April 24, 1920, in Maryville, Missouri, she was the daughter of Irish immigrants Howard and Violet Susan (OReilly) McCaffrey. She graduated from high school in Maryville and later Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, also in Maryville. While attending college, she met the handsome young Vern Edward Carmichael, and the two were united in marriage on June 27, 1946, at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Maryville.Mary began her teaching career in Herman, Missouri. She and her husband, Ed, moved to Tama/Toledo in 1952 where he began his career as school principal. Mary later began teaching, first as speech teacher in the Montour building and lastly at the South Tama Schools as the 9th grade English teacher, retiring after 22 years of devoted service.Mrs. Carmichael was a faithful member of St. Patricks Catholic Church parish, and enjoyed golf, playing on the school teachers volleyball and softball teams in years past, bowling, and never gave up faith of the Iowa Hawkeyes! She enjoyed playing bridge, quilting and pets, but most of all loved her family and her faith.Left to cherish her memory are her children: Karen Carmichael of Loveland, Colorado; Jim (Karen) Carmichael of St. Charles, MO and children- Richard (Jamie) Johnson of St. Charles, Christopher Carmichael (fiance Sara) of Las Vegas and Ryan Johnson (fianc, Lauren) of St. Charles; Terri (Brad) Fisher of Montour and children- Amanda (Chris) Paul of Tipton and their children Dakotah and Regan; Sean McAreavy currently at Iowa State University, 1st. Lt. Michael (Nosika) Fisher of the USN and their daughter Natalie; Anna (Sean) Lyons of Traer and children Tylynn, Tasia and Delaney, her niece Trudi Wise of Clarinda, and many friends.In death, she rejoined her beloved Ed who died in 1999, her daughter Mary Kathryn Kathy in 1970, daughter-in-law Cindy, sister Theresa (Merrill) Kill, parent-in-laws Vern and Fern Carmichael and sister-in-law Marian (Lester) Wise.
