Mary Jo Kups, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 13, 2025, at The Willows of Marshalltown, Iowa.
Per the wishes of Mary Jo and her family, cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service has been scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, at 6:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation also on Friday, July 11th one hour prior to the service. Mary Jo will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. Memorials in Mary Jo’s name may be directed to The Willows and Suncrest Hospice. Mary Ann (White) Kups was born on April 6, 1938, in Portsmouth, Iowa. She was the daughter of Leo and Veronica Lucille (Wehr) White. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Portsmouth. Mary Jo started her versatile working career in various industries and companies. She worked as a waitress, operated an in-home daycare, worked for Fisher Controls and in Walmart’s cash office, where she dedicated 15 years until her retirement. In her free time, Mary Jo enjoyed sewing, doing crossword puzzles, reading romance novels, watching game shows and westerns, and going for drives. Her favorite time was spent attending her grandchildren’s various activities.
She is survived by her children: Tami Christie of Marshalltown, IA, Cheryl (Stan) Martins of Postville, IA, Darlynn (Craig) Mostaert of Castalia, IA, Kimberlee (Jeff) Benson of Montour, IA, Karalee (Mark) Thompson of St. Paul Park, MN, and Keith (Cheryl) Kups of Council Bluffs, IA; her grandchildren: Tyler, Mackenzee, Spencer, Kallee, Daylee, Mariah, Gabrielle, Victoria, Timothy, Wyatt, Kelli, Kevin, Ryan, Erin, Hope, Isaac, Hollen, Graham, Ruthie, and Moses; eleven great-grandchildren and one on the way; her brother Dennis (Lori) White of Coeur d’ Alene, ID; and multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mary Jo is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth; two daughters: Brenda and Annette Wohlers; her stepson, Terry Kups; her parents Leo and Veronica; and three siblings: Patricia Hines, Donna Wendt and Neil White.
