Michael John Hauptly, 51, of Marshalltown, passed away on Sunday May 25, 2014, at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home. Memorial services for Mike will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa River Hospice Home. Michael John Hauptly was born January 8, 1963 in Marshalltown to Eugene and Kathryn Savage Hauptly. Mike graduated from Marshalltown High School in May, 1981. He was employed by Smittys Grocery and had also worked at American Body Shop. He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church. Michael loved playing football, but baseball was what he excelled at, playing 2nd base. He developed a love of motors and auto mechanics at an early age, working side by side with his dad. His proudest purchase was his Kawasaki 650 motorcycle. He and Dave Hennis took a fun filled trip to Colorado on their bikes, summer after graduation. Michael was a quick study, learning to downhill ski in less than an hour, far surpassing his sister Linda, who mistakenly thought she was teaching him. Mike was a loving, caring son, as dedicated to his mom and dad as they were to him. Mikes friendship was definitely a treasure held by many people. He will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memory is his parents: Gene and Kate of Marshalltown, sister: Linda (Dean) Baldwin of Marshalltown, nephews Jared and Ryan McRill and great nephews Kyler and Ian McRill. Mike is preceded in death by his grandparents.
