Richard Acord, 64, of Marshalltown, died Thursday, January 7th, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 11th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Immediately following the services, friends are invited to a fellowship and coffee with the family at the funeral home. Private interment will be at a later date. Full military honors will be provided by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. Visitation will be held from 2-4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Born Richard Dean Acord on June 10th, 1945, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, he was the son of Wilbur and Isabelle (Beadle) Acord. He received his education in the Ottumwa Public Schools. In 1962 until receiving his honorable discharge in 1968, he served our country honorably in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany and Korea. Upon his return to stateside, he was employed at the John Morrell Packing Plant in Ottumwa until their closing. In August of 1973, he moved to Marshalltown with employment at the Chicago-Northwestern. Richard retired in June of 2005 from Union-Pacific RR and had spent ten years in North Platte, NE. On November 15th, 1968, he was united in marriage to Martha Manning in Kirksville, MO. Richard was quite an avid outdoorsman- enjoying fishing and hunting, hunting mushrooms (even sharing his secret spots with his son, Melvin). He loved cooking and making homemade candies, but the treasures he loved most in life were his family. He was blessed with Martha- his loving wife of 41 years, children: Susan (Mark) Weida and their children Elizabeth, Zachary, Andrew and Garrett of Victor, Iowa, Amy Acord and daughter Amber of Laurel, Melvin Acord (fianc Sharon Lamm) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Jane Acord of Coburg, Germany and Dorthee Greiner and son Andre of Neustadt, Germany, his siblings: Robert (Sharon) Acord of Yuma, Arizona, Willard (Reita) Acord of State Center, Wanda Penrod of Ottumwa, his mother and father-in-law George and Vivian Manning of Ottumwa, brothers-in-law Max (Beverly) Manning of Ottumwa and LeRoy (Sherry) Manning of Kennewick, Washington, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. In death he was rejoined with his parents, step-father Walter Long, brother Gary and sister Gesena McNamar.
