Grandpa Robert Earl Lane passed peacefully on January 21, 2010, with his grandson by his side at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice Johnston, 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston IA 50131. A visitation with the family present will be on Monday, February 1st from 6:00-8:00 p.m. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Robert and his family. Phone 641-844-1234.He was born to Helen and Joe Lane in Clarence, Iowa, on February 13, 1923. A man of the Greatest Generation, he served his country honorably and returned to Marshalltown to his wife, Shirley Ferguson, and son, Dennis Joe. Years later another son, Randy, was born and completed their family.Bob worked at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown for 54 years and enjoyed his farm in Marshalltown where he was close to his grandchildren, watching them grow and participate in activities throughout their lives. Gramps also enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Hawkeyes (against his grandsonswishes), camping at Rathbun, holiday parties with his fellow Fisher retirees, taking his faithful companions Doc & Ollie for rides through the city, sharing stories on the deck with his neighbors on Amick Avenue, and spending time with his great grandchildren whom he loved and cherished with all his heart. He will be forever loved and missed by his family; sons Dennis Joe Lane, Randy (LeEtte) Lane, grandchildren Brian & Amy Lane, Brad &Tani Lane, Joel, Becky, and Jeremy Lane, and his great-grandchildrenKreyton, Carter, Kennedy Lula, Holden, and Addison who were blessed to have such an incredible Papa in their lives.He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, brothers Richard & George, parents Helen & Joe, and his constant companions Doc & Ollie.A special thank you to Kathy Fitzgerald from Mercy Urbandale, whose love and compassion through her care for Gramps kept him going these last years, Mercy Hospice in Johnston for their guidance, and to our friends who always regarded Gramps as one of their own.
