Rosella Ruth Thompson, 97, formerly from Union, Iowa passed away at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage Iowa.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with services on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. For further information or to send a condolence please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call (641) 844-1234. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Ruth and her family.Ruth Willard was born to Schuler and Bertha Willard on January 19, 1915 in Albion on Mormon Ridge. She graduated from Albion High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College where she received her Masters Degree. She taught in Liscomb, Des Moines and Long Beach California before teaching 5th grade for 29 years at Rogers School.In 1948 she married Virgil Thompson from Marshalltown. They purchased a farm south of New Providence in 1952; they retired from farming and then moved to Union, Iowa in 1980. Ruth liked to work in her garden and made delicious squash pies, and loved to knit making afghans and quilts which she gave to each of her nieces. She was also very passionate in gardening and canning and loved to travel and was very fond of her beautiful Christmas cactus. She was also a member of the Bangor Liberty Friends Church and a volunteer for the Union Library for 20 years. She was a resident at Oakview in Conrad, Iowa and Faith Lutheran Nursing Home for 8 years.Ruth is survived by her brother Paul (Mary) Willard of St Paul, Minnesota and several nieces and nephews including Carolyn (Glen) Amdahl of Orchard, Iowa, Hugh (Francine) Thompson of Gilman, Iowa and Dale (Glenda) Thompson of Ferguson, Iowa.Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Virgil who passed in 2004 and brothers Elwood, Elmer, Lloyd, Weldon, Wendell, Herschel, Marvin and Carrol and her sister Dollie.Memorials made be sent to Union Library in Union, Iowa or Bangor Liberty Church in Bangor, Iowa.
