V. Jean Whitmore, 69, of rural Marshalltown, died early Monday morning, February 4th, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 7th, at the New Hope Christian Church with Pastor Kerry Jech officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Born Velva Jean Smoldt on April 23rd, 1938, in Marshall County, she was the daughter of Frank and Velva (Shepard) Smoldt. She graduated from the Albion High Schools class of 1956. On March 9th, 1959, at the Presbyterian Church in Albion, she was united in marriage to Lowell Lody Whitmore. They have resided in the Marshalltown and Albion communities all of their married lives. Jean was employed at Fisher Controls for 38 years until her retirement and was a member of the New Hope Christian Church. Mrs. Whitmore enjoyed sewing, reading, puzzles, her family and grandchildren and was blessed with a heart of gold. Jean was quite a fighter and won her battle of 13 years over cancer. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 48 years, Lody, her children: Roger (Melanie) Whitmore, Gary Whitmore and Karen (Todd) Ryan, grandchildren: Taryn Whitmore and Austin and Cody Ryan, brothers Jerry (Sharon) Smoldt and Allen (Jamie) Smoldt and sister Cheryl (Larry) Larson all of Marshalltown, several nieces, nephews, the Whitmore and Smoldt families and a host of friends. In death she has rejoined her parents and brother, Fred Smoldt.
