Vernon Davis, 80, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown with his loving family at his side. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Vern and his family. Phone 641-844-1234. Vernon LeRoy Davis was born on November 30, 1932, in Jefferson County, to Taney Eugene and Vera Mable Sutton Davis. On October 11, 1952, Vern was united in marriage to Norma Richards in her childhood home. Vern served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955. In 1965 he and Norma moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he operated his own full service gas station for two years. As a young man, Vern tried his hand at many trades to find that special niche. Construction was in his blood at a young age and he came to Marshalltown to help build the Center Street Bridge. Upon returning to Marshalltown in 1967, Vern went to work for Cessford Construction and worked his way over the years to Vice President. Vern loved his work and the other guys on the job, making many friends doing municipal work. Give respect to earn respect, and Jack of all trades, master of none, were his mottos. Vern was a member of the Richland Masonic Lodge #38, American Legion Post #46, an honorary member of the Iowa Transportation Museum and Past President of APAI. His interests included golfing, his two old cars, NASCAR, and traveling. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Norma; daughters: Karen (Dan) Young, and Kristie (Tim) Clements; and son, Randy Davis. Seven grandchildren and Eight great grandchildren. Vern is preceded in death by his parents and brother ,Virgil Davis.
