Yvette was born to James Cape and LaVonne (Judd) Meyer on September 1, 1958, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Growing up amongst her six younger siblings, Yvette developed a warmth and sense of humor that would define her throughout her life.
Yvette’s early education was through the various schools in Marshalltown, graduating with the class of 1976. She furthered her education at Marshalltown Community College where she became a Registered Nurse.
Yvette had three children of her own, Shelbie, Jamie, and Colton. For decades, Yvette spent her life in the business of taking care of others as a pillar of the Marshalltown Nursing Community, from her work at the various care facilities in and around the area to her later work as a nursing and safety educator, proctor, and certifier. Additionally, she was an avid, well-loved member of Marshalltown’s Sports Associations, whether it be her feared cannon of a pitching arm in softball, her years of Park and Rec volleyball or the numerous bowling leagues she found herself in through the years, Yvette was known to be a fierce competitor to those she played and a fast friend to anyone. Always quick to offer a goofy grin and a joke to brighten the mood. She had the most infectious and loveable personality.
If you asked Yvette what her favorite thing to do was, she’d reply ‘Spend time with my grandchildren’ with no hesitation. If you asked further, you’d find a woman who always kept herself busy. From seeing live concerts and supporting local musicians, crocheting, crafting with all manner of repurposed materials, reading a good book before bed, and even in her spare time running an online business. No matter how many plates she had spinning, she always had time for others, whether it be making a stranger feel welcome or to help someone in need. Yvette had the kindness of a Saint, the heart of a Lion, and the inner strength of a Mountain.
Left to carry on her legacy is her daughter Shelbie (Bobby) Balk of Waucoma, IA and their daughters: Sawyer and Ivey; daughter Jamie (Chris) Swanson of Eldora, IA and their children: Ethan, RJ, Olivia and Breckyn; son Colton Brown of Marshalltown, IA; mother LaVonne Meyer of Marshalltown, IA; sister Denise (Steve) White of Sully, IA; sister Sherrie Hernandez of Tulsa, OK; sister Clarice (David) Carr of Newton, IA; brother James (Denise) Timberland of Ames, IA; sister Collette (Todd) Mathews of Marshalltown, IA; and sister Danielle (Charlie) Axtell of Wyandotte, OK; alongside numerous extended family.
She is preceded in death by her father, James Cape; niece, Nicole Gilliland; and several aunts and uncles.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering under the direction of her family on January 13 from 12-4 pm at the VFW 839 Post located at 107 E. Meadow Lane Marshalltown, IA 50158.
