Alan Jay Shorty Holmes, 56, of Gilman, died Tuesday, October 7th, 2008, at his home.Graveside services celebrating Shortys life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 10th , at the Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with Bobby Shomo, chaplain of the Iowa River Hospice, officiating. He will be buried with full military honors. Following interment, all are invited to a fellowship at the American Legion Hall on Main Street in Gilman. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph 641-844-1234.Born on June 15th, 1952, he was the son of Norman, Sr. and Mary (Hobbs) Holmes. He graduated from the SEMCO High School in 1971. He served our country honorably in the US Navy for 3 years. Shorty was employed at Fisher Controls and most recently Meskwaki Casino. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and golfing. Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Diane Bowers of Gilman, nieces and nephews, Teresa (Brad) McCall of Grinnell, Melissa Otis of El Sobrante, CA. and Jason (Sheila) Bowers of Gilman. In death, he has rejoined his parents, his brother, Richard Holmes, and his nephew, Shane Bowers.
