Alan Smoldt

July 19, 1951 — December 24, 2024

Alan Smoldt, age 73, of Marshalltown, passed away with family at his side on Tuesday evening, December 24th, at the Iowa River Hospice Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 31st the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with full military honors by the Combined American Legion and VFW Honor Guard in the Marshalltown area. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Born on July 19th, 1951, in Marshalltown, he was the youngest of five children born to Frank and Velva (Shepard) Smoldt. He was raised in Albion and attended school in his hometown, later graduating from the Marshalltown High School in 1969. Following graduation, he served our country honorably in the United States Army during the Viet Nam War and received his honorable discharge as a drill sergeant.

Alan had a great work ethic that he carried through his life. He credited it to a structured lifestyle in the military. He obtained the status of master plumber and worked for Waldinger in managerial/supervisory positions until his retirement. Previously, he worked for a railroad specialist assisting in derailment recovery and Hartwig Plumbing and Heating.

Through a mutual friend (Cindy Hanken), he was introduced to Jami Warnell over a game of ping pong. The game became a lesson on growing tomatoes and the rest is history. The two were married on December 18th, 1993, at their home in front of their fireplace. They made Marshalltown their home all of their married lives.

Those who knew Alan were very aware he cherished his daughters and all of his family, his dog Tanner (and maybe not in this exact order), gardening, boating, camping, riding his Harley and sitting by the campfire. He was a member of New Hope Christian Church.

Left to cherish his memory are Jami, his loving wife of 31 years; his daughters Tina Beurskens of Marshalltown and her three children Austin, Ethan (Cristina) and Michael (Katie) and Jennifer (Jeff) Pfantz of Marshalltown and their children Kaylem, Emma and Peyton and bonus son Bryan (Stacey) Hebert of Marshalltown and daughter Faith; his brother Frank Smoldt, Jr. “Jerry”, sister Cheryl (Larry) Larson and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In death, Alan rejoined his parents, brother Fred and sister Jean Whitmore.
