Alan West

Alan Leo West, 90, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home early in the morning of Monday, July 10, 2023.

Per the wishes of Alan and his family, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, July 13 at 10:30 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Marshalltown Public Library. Alan was born January 22, 1933 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the youngest of two children born to Robert Sylvester and Agnes (Martinson) West. He grew up on the family dairy farm and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1951. After meeting the love of his life, Joy Wiese, the couple was united in marriage on October 10, 1953 at Montour Methodist Church.

Alan honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. Upon his return, he began a life-long occupation in the trucking industry, beginning his career at Winters Dairy and eventually operated West Bros Trucking. He was never afraid of hard work and was a fifth-generation original landowner in Marshall County. Though free time was limited, he was an avid reader of all things American History/American military. Alan was a member of the American Legion Post #46 in Marshalltown. He also loved all things John Deere.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 69 years, Joy; his children: James (Roxana) West, Cathy (Kevin) Wiseman and Lori (Terry) Schoppe; grandchildren: Nathan (Chris) West, Rebecca (Bowen) Fleming, Alicia (Nick) Barber, Philip (Natalie) Wiseman, Michaela Schoppe and Madison Schoppe; great-grandchildren: Breanna, Lucille, Bella, Vienna, Rowan and Evelyn; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; brother Thomas West and son-in-law Michael Stalzer.
