Albert L. Norris

Albert Lee Norris, 93, of Marshalltown, passed away March 8, 2012 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center of natural causes. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. A luncheon will be held after the graveside service at the funeral home (the family would like to extend an invitation for those who cant make it to the cemetery to join them at the funeral home). Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Albert and his family.He was born on May 12, 1918 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Hazel (Houser) Norris and Claude R. Norris.His family moved to Marshalltown where he attended Franklin Elementary School and he graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1936; while in high school he worked for Witwer Wholesale Grocer. In high school Al met Elizabeth (Betty) Benziger and they were married April 14, 1941. They moved to Ames, Iowa where Al attended Iowa State University. His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the US Army in 1941. In 1942 he was sent overseas with the 34th Infantry Division; he served in North Africa and Italy and earned the Bronze Star. After returning from Italy, Al was stationed at the Prisoner of War Camp in Algona, Iowa. Returning to Iowa State University after his discharge from the Army, he received his Bachelor of Science in Farm Operations. He farmed south of Marshalltown and he also managed the Le Grand Elevator until he retired. Albert spent his later years at Bickford Cottage in Marshalltown. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty. Albert is survived by his three daughters, Nannette (Michael Oberle) of Colorado; Chris (John Fitzgerald) of Monument, Colorado; Shelley (Kim Barron) of Marshalltown, Iowa; and his grandsons Matthew (Susan Sanders) Oberle of Ft. Collins, Colorado; and Alex (Hillery Hartinger) Oberle of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
