Alberta Coleman

Alberta “Bert” Coleman, 94, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the morning of March 8, 2023 at Grandview Heights under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Services for Alberta will be held on Tuesday, March 14th beginning at 2:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. Alberta Stewart was born January 16, 1929 to parents George and Emily (Greene) Stewart in Gilman, Iowa. She was one of 13 children. Alberta attended school in Gilman, Iowa and later graduated from Gilman High School in the class of 1946. She went on and attended beauty school to receive her cosmetology license.

On February 19, 1949, she was united in marriage to the love of her life Clyde Arthur Coleman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they made a home in Melbourne where they raised their four children, Dennis, Steve, Byron, and Tami. Alberta practiced cosmetology for many years. She had first and foremost taken care of her family but as her kids aged, she began working in the kitchen at the Melbourne schools.

In her free time, Alberta was involved in multiple bowling leagues in Marshalltown. She loved to watch Iowa Hawkeye Basketball, crochet, play card games with her friends, and host hamburger frys and family reunions at her home.

Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Dennis (Dar) Coleman, Steve (Sue) Coleman, Byron (Julie) Coleman, and Tami (Barry) York; her grandchildren, Missy (David) Weuve, Megan (Mike) Camenzind, Emily (Corey) Hoeft, Bryan (Amber) Coleman, Josh (Shara) Coleman, David (Melanie) Volz, Bruce York, Renae (Jason) Rudkin, and Benjamin (Christine) York; her 19 great-grandchildren; her 4 great-great-grandchildren and one more on the way; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; her parents, George and Emily Stewart; and her 12 siblings.
