Alice M. Garrett, age 83, longtime Montour resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on the morning of July 12, 2026 at Glenwood Place in Marshalltown under the care of Suncrest Hospice.
Funeral services for Alice will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026 beginning at 2:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, July 17, 2026 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorials in Alice’s name may be directed to her family for a memorial fund to be established. Alice May Carkhuff was born May 16, 1943 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was the eldest of four children born to William A. Sr. and Betty J. (Dressen) Carkhuff. Alice grew up in Montour, Iowa and was a member of the last graduating class of Montour High School graduating in 1960.
While in school, Alice met her high school sweetheart Earl “Ron” Garrett. On February 12, 1961, they were united in marriage at the Montour United Methodist Church. Shortly after their marriage, they bought their first house and began a family raising two sons, Duane and Darren. Alice spent 18 years working for the South Tama Community School District as a teacher’s aide. She held various part time work over the years and made many fond memories working at Fotos by Foley and Stewart Photography in Montour. Alice enjoyed taking part in various activities and committees serving as a volunteer for the Montour Election Committee and tended to voter registrations, Montour Community Club, EGAD and taught Sunday school at the Montour United Methodist Church where she was a member. In her free time, she loved to create beautiful flower gardens each summer, spent time working on various crafting projects and was an avid movie lover holding a soft spot for the classics.
Those left to remember her charm and feisty personality are her husband of 65 years, Ron; her two sons, Duane (Michele) Garrett and Darren (Pam) Garrett; two grandchildren, Collin Garrett and Shannon Garrett; two great-grandchildren, Khaidencey and Ryder Garrett. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings, Pat Sawyer and Lillie Green; her half-brother, Dennis Carkhuff along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In eternal life, Alice rejoins her parents, William A. Carkhuff Sr. and Betty Carkhuff; grandson Daniel Garrett and her brother, William A. “Billy” Carkhuff Sr.
