Alice Pfander 93, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Bickford Cottage in Marshalltown, Iowa while under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2012 at First United Church of Christ in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery in Clarinda, Iowa at approximately 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Church of Christ, Marshalltown, IA, Iowa River Hospice or to the Salvation Army. Alice Louella Genevieve Pfander was born on November 20, 1918 in Clarinda, Iowa. She was the daughter of Arthur and Hattie (Troy) Pfander. Alice attended rural schools through the 8th grade where she was the valedictorian of the county. She then attended Clarinda High School graduating in 1933 at the age of 16. Alice attended Clarinda Junior College and then went to Park College in Missouri graduating in 1937. Her first teaching job was in Massena, Missouri, after 2 years she accepted a position in Corning, Iowa and she then moved to Marshalltown in 1957 where she taught math at Miller Middle School until her retirement. Alice was a charter member in Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and was honored at its 50th anniversary celebration in 2011 for being a member for 61 years. Alice was active in the Teachers Association and in her church. Alice loved writing poems, working soduku puzzles and cryptograms. She enjoyed traveling to Colorado with her sister many summers. She loved to read particularly history and mystery novels. Alice supported many children through World Childrens Fund for decades and cherished much pleasure from their correspondence. Left to cherish her memory is her niece, Sharon Hays of Mason City, great nieces: Denise Hays (Donnie Hingeveld) of Spring Valley, Minnesota, Kelly McDonough (Denis Chernyshov) of Rochester, Minnesota, Shana (Jerry) Jeffrey of Rockwell, Iowa Siobhan (Tom) Mayer of Essex Junction, Vermont, grand- nieces: Cheyenne (Grant) Peterson of Sheffield, Iowa, Kendra Newton of Marshalltown, Iowa, Kelli Jeffrey of Mason City, Iowa, Siera Jeffrey of Rockwell, Iowa, April Jeffrey of Cedar Fall, Iowa, Katia Chernyshov of Madison, Wisconsin and grand-nephew Alex Schuler of Rochester, Minnesota and many other great nieces and nephews.
