Alice Rutherford, 94, of Marshalltown, died early Tuesday morning, January 11, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown with her loving family at her side.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 15, at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Dillon with Pastor Fred Berry officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Stavanger Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Alice and her family, (641) 844-1234.Born on June 16, 1916, in Dunbar, Iowa, she was the daughter of Thore and Anna (Bryngelson) Thorson. She graduated from the Dunbar High Schools Class of 1933. On August 30, 1933, she was united in marriage to Gilbert Rutherford in Decorah, Iowa and farmed in the Dunbar community. Mrs. Rutherford was also employed at the Farmers Co-Op in Gilman as a bookkeeper and J.C. Penneys in Marshalltown. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Dillon, the Dunbar Happy Hour Club, Dillon Social Club, Senior Citizens 500 Card Club in LeGrand, the Over 80 Club and a former bridge player.Alice will be fondly remembered for her love of family, reading, following the Hawkeyes, quilting, playing cards, gardening, raising chickens and appreciating the Iowa farmland. She loved to travel and see the world- visiting three continents, 18 countries and all 50 states (including Alaska and Hawaii twice.) Her family was blessed with a trip to Europe to celebrate the Rutherfords 50 year anniversary in 1983. At age 85, she rode a camel in Australia and most recently at age 94 combined with her sons during harvest of 2010. Gilbert, her husband of 60 years, and Alice were avid square-dancers in younger years and she was able to see all their grandchildren and great-grandchildren graduate from college.Left to cherish her memory are her three sons:, Gary (Louise) of rural Marshalltown, Terrance (Rita) of Atlantic, Iowa, Bradley (Paula) of rural Marshalltown and, four grandchildren: Steven (fianc Rita) Rutherford of Columbia, Missouri, Jana (Tom) Pelham of Gilman, Lynn Rutherford of Denver, Colorado and Leigh Rutherford of Minneapolis, Minnesota, three great-grandchildren: Taree Pelham, Tyler (Brittney) Rutherford and Jacob (Angela) Pelham, as well as a host of friends.In death, Alice rejoined her beloved Gilbert, her parents, a great-grandson Grant Rutherford, brothers Harold and Chester and sister, Olive Brenneck.
