Alva Bumsted, 86, of Marshalltown, died Friday evening, October 2nd, at the MMSC ER. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 7th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Cremation rites will follow the services with private burial at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Al and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Alva was born in Marshall County on October 29th, 1922, to Edward and Ada (Kuns) Bumsted. He attended Marshalltown Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He was an Electricians Mate and served on the LST and troop transports in the landings in Italy and France. He married Virginia L. Robold on June 16th, 1946 in New York City and they lived there and Philadelphia until moving to Marshalltown. He was employed at Lennox Industries and the Iowa Highway Commission in Ames as State Electrician. Al was an avid golfer, hunter, trap shooter and fisherman all his life. Enjoying these activities always with his family and friends, always catching the big ones. He and his wife spent many of their retirement years traveling to Florida, Texas, and Minnesota to be with family and friends. He was an active member of the Marshalltown Elks Lodge, Marshalltown Gun Club and the Lennox Trapshooting Association. He was an Iowa State Handicap Trapshooting Champion and the winner of the Iowa State Trapshooting Diamond Badge in the past. Left to cherish his memory are: Virginia, his loving wife of 63 years; three children- Susan Mohler of Rochelle, IL, Gary Bumsted of Marshalltown and Alan (Stacy) Bumsted of Houston, TX; his grandchildren- Tiffany, Brittany, Broc and Natasha Mohler; Justin, Shane, Patrick, Allison and Abby Bumsted and great-grandchildren Aiden Mohler and Cole, Barrett and Mason Bumsted. Also surviving are his brother Robert and sister Mildred as well as many very special nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.
