Alvin (Al) Karsjen Jr., 66 of Melbourne died Saturday August 15, 2009, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to The Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. For condolences please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Al and his family. Alvin was born on September 21, 1942, in Palmyra Township, Illinois to Alvin and Reva Marie (Adams) Karsjen, Sr. He attended high school in Walker, Minnesota and graduated with the class of 1961. He served our country honorably from 1961 to 1967 in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as rank of 1st Class Petty Officer. Al had been a truck driver, retiring from Ruan Transportation in Marshalltown. Family was of utmost importance to him. He also enjoyed working on his house, motorcycling, shooting pool and loved to travel and make new friends - he will be remembered as a hard worker. Left to cherish his memory are his children; Kathryn (Todd) Bleeker of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Jerry (Shelly) Karsjen of Nevada, Iowa and Mike (Julie) Karsjen of Rhodes, Iowa, his extended family David, Kathy, Susan and Bobby,11 grand-children, stepmother Gert Karsjen and his siblings; Ingrid (Chad) Sawyer of Le Grand, Iowa and Wilfored Karsjen of Garwin and special freind Mary Isaacson. Alvin was proceed in death by his parents, a brother Bobby Karsjen and a grandson Landen Bleeker.
