Alvin Post

Alvin Ike Post, 77, formerly of Bloomfiled, Iowa, currently a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, died there Saturday, August 20, 2011. Funeral services for Alvin will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Visitation for Alvin will be held on Tuesday, from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel where his family will be present to greet friends. Burial will follow services at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed in Alvins name to his family. Alvin was born July 10, 1934, the son of Arthur A. Post and Bessie Mae McMath. He was raised in Ottumwa, Iowa, and attended the Ottumwa school system. Alvin enlisted with the United StatesArmy at an early age and went on to serve several years throughout the Korean War time period. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Alvin spent several years as an over-the-road truck driver. He also worked construction in Des Moines and even drove the Amish for a time period in Bloomfield, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Shirley Smithhart on August 8, 1992, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Together, they traveled the United States visiting family and friends. Alvin also enjoyed woodworking, restoring buses and RVs, and his two pet dogs. Alvin is survived by his wife Shirley, of Ottumwa, his daughter Michele Nyman, his granddaughter, his sister Judy (Harold) Allen of Manning, South Carolina and many nieces and nephews. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Max, Anne, Norma Jean, Carl Richard, Margarite, Margaret and Carolyn.
