Andrew Schwartz, 82, of the Iowa Veterans Home, formerly of Des Moines, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008.Cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no funeral services at this time. Burial will be at a future date in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa. There will be no visitation. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Memorials may be directed to the family. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Andrew and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Andrew William Schwartz was born on February 7, 1926, in LeMars, Iowa. He was the son of William Peter and Bertha (Freking) Schwarz. He graduated from Spaulding Catholic High School in Granville, Iowa. After high school, he attended some radio training. He served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1944-1946. On August 27, 1961, he married Karen Ann Cruikshank in Des Moines. They were later divorced. Andrew worked as a postal clerk in Des Moines. He was a member of the VFW, Postal Workers Union, and Catholic Foresters. He loved riding motorcycles and golfing. He is survived by his children, Don (Jeri) Schwartz of Des Moines, Helen (Kevin) Ellenwood of Indianola, and William Schwartz of Des Moines; and his granddaughter, Ashley Bateman of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents.
