Anna Marie Pothast, 91, of Melbourne, died Sunday, September 25, 2011, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with the burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. The Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Anna and her family.Born Anna Marie Goff on September 15, 1920, at Grinnell, Iowa, she was the daughter of William and Alda (Slater) Goff. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from the Grinnell High Schools Class of 1938. During high school, she worked at her fathers bakery in Grinnell and after graduation as a receptionist for a dentist in Grinnell and later as a bookkeeper for several offices.On a Saturday night in 1940, she and some friends came to Marshalltown where she met a handsome young man by the name of Ronnie Pothast. On May 25, 1941, she was united in marriage to Ronald Pothast at the family home in Grinnell with the wedding cake made by her father. This city girl soon adapted to country life as they began to start a family of five on the farm. She loved the years on the farm and enjoyed cooking and baking, gardening, and listening to the radio. Her greatest memories were of her family all gathered for dinner. Later, Anna moved to the Embers in Marshalltown.Left to cherish her memory are her children: William Ronald (Patricia) Pothast of Eagle Butte, SD, Ronald Fred (Barb) Pothast of Polk City, IA, Douglas Allen Pothast of Marshalltown, IA, Dennis Charles (Mary) Pothast of Melbourne, IA, and Margaret Ann (Rob) Tiernan of Marshalltown, IA; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mary Lousie Dixon of Marshalltown, IAShe is preceded in death by her husband and parents.
