Anna Belle (Anne) Sweeney, 85, of Marshalltown died Friday, August 22nd, at Grandview Heights Nursing Home.A celebration of Annes life will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 27th , at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. Immediately following the service, a time of fellowship and refreshment will be held prior to departing for the cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Anne will be laid to rest in Graceland Cemetery, Creston, IA at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Phone 641-844-1234.Born on the 4th of July, 1923, in Creston, IA, Anne was the daughter of John W. and Fannie (James) Derauf. She was raised in Creston and graduated from Creston High School in 1941.During her High School career, Anne played first chair trombone in the Iowa All-State Band four years in a row and earned 1st place at National music competitions both as a trombonist and a vocalist. Following graduation, she studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and, while there, she was married to Roy Bratzel. The marriage ended in 1948. In 1951, Anne was united in marriage to Clifton H. Sweeney in Creston. They made their home in Marshalltown. She was a member of PEO, played trombone in the Marshalltown Municipal Band for over 50 years, as well as the MCC College Band. Throughout her life, Anne played organ and piano for many, many weddings, funerals and events working with most of the local funeral homes and churches in Central Iowa. In addition, Anne prided herself on being a bit of a card shark-specializing in Bridge. She was also known as an accomplished gardener and an antique expert, having owned the well-known Marshalltown antique shop, The Den of Antiquity for over 25 years. Family and friends would agree that two words could always be used to describe Anne Sweeney-Loving and Feisty!Left to cherish Annes memory are her sons David John G. Bratzel, Steven R. Bratzel, and Shawn Sweeney as well as daughter-in-laws Carol Bratzel and Joanne Halvorsen; her grandchildren: Immanuel, Noah, Luke, Hannah, Regel, Isaac, Will, Ira, Irena, Grace, Ben, Hans, Sarah, and Zac Bratzel; four great-grandchildren; her sister Garneta Rose (Bobbi) Brunk; as well as a host of friends. In death, Anne has rejoined her husband Clifton, dear friend Chuck Savage, her parents, three sisters, and her three brothers.
