Uniquely enough, her sister (Marlene) was born on June 22nd, because delivery started near midnight. Arlene graduated from the New Sharon High School’s class of 1968 and later attended college in Austin, MN. Arlene was united in marriage to Dennis Carkhuff and to this union, two beautiful daughters were born. On February 25th, 1983, she was married to Robert Johnson at the Calvary Baptist Church in Marshalltown. She was secretary for many years at Gervich and Sons and later Riverside Cemetery. After the retirement of longtime manager Wallace Loft, Arlene was appointed General Manager of Riverside Cemetery faithfully and ethically running it until her retirement. Arlene was a woman of deep faith and love of God who treasured her family. She was an active member of the Salvation Army, Evening Lion’s Club, Soroptimists and Certified Professional Secretaries, many times serving as president of these organizations. She enjoyed sewing, teaching Sunday school, reading and time with her grandchildren. Left to cherish her memory are Bob, her loving husband of 35 years; two daughters- Sheila Louise (Kevin) Plain of Dacono, CO, and Shelley Mae (Jim) Ferneau of Burlington; ten dear grandchildren and two precious great-granddaughters and many other family and friends. In death, Arlene rejoined her parents, step-mother, sister Marlene and four grandchildren.
