Arlene (Mrs. Paul) Schaeffer, 77, of Colo, died Tuesday evening, May 24, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in State Center with Pastor Joan Swander officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Colo Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in State Center from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Please note: 1st Avenue is closed, so access must be from 2nd Avenue to reach the church. Memorials may be directed to the church in her memory. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Born Arlene Hayes on May 6, 1934, near State Center, Iowa, she was the daughter of Walter and Lela (Alexander) Hayes. She received her education in the State Center #8 rural school and graduated from the Rhodes High Schools Class of 1952. On October 27, 1957, she was united in marriage to Paul Schaeffer at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in State Center by Pastor E.J. Braun. The couple lived in the State Center and Colo areas, moving to Colo in 1966. Mrs. Schaeffer did child care for 30 years and enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading and many trips to Mesa, AZ, to enjoy the winters. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Colo Library Board. Left to cherish her memory is Paul, her loving husband of 53 years, her sons: Brian of Nevada and Michael of Grinnell, three grandchildren: Molly, Erik and Alyssa, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. In death, she rejoined her parents, four sisters and one brother.
