Arlo Holmes, 78, of Marshalltown, died late Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown surrounded by his loving family.Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on February 2, 2010 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. Full military honors will be provided by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. For condolences, please visit www.mithchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Arlo and his family. Born Arlo Duane Holmes on June 28, 1931, to Leo and Meryle (Beck) Holmes in rural Montour, Arlo was educated in the area of his birth. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1954. On August 9, 1958, Arlo married Margaret Luther at St Marys Church in Marshalltown. After marriage they resided in Legrand for a short time and then moved to Marshalltown. Arlo had been employed by Package Corporation of America, Lindsey Soft Water and then retired from Farm Service.Arlo loved his family, his cat, Sniffles, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sharing stories while fishing and enjoyed cards, especially Pepper. Arlo loved the John Deere A and B model tractor and always treasured the thought of owning one. He also enjoyed his visits with family and friends.Left to cherish Arlos memories is his wife of 51 years, Margaret; his daughter Eileen(Ron) Claude of Maxwell, Iowa; sons Dan Holmes and Greg(Stacie) Holmes, all of Marshalltown; Arlos grandchildren Matt (Heather Allen), Nathan (Danielle Ross), and Josh Claude and Shane Holmes of Marshalltown; his great-grandchildren Isaac and Zachary; his sister-in-law Pat Holmes; his brother-in-law Eugene Baker; and many nieces and nephews In death Arlo rejoins his parents, a son Carl, a brother Dale, and a sister Myrna Baker.
