Arnold Olson

Arnold Olson, 83, of Marshalltown, died Monday morning, March 31st, at the MMSC Emergency Room. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4th, at the Iowa River Church of the Brethren with Pastor David Lewis officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Arnold and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on July 6th, 1924, at Marshalltown, he was the son of Thore and Julia (Rohnstead) Olson. He graduated from the Dunbar High School. On June 25th, 1944, he was united in marriage to Janice Howard in Marshalltown at her parents home. Soon after, he left for the service and defended our country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. He returned and the couple farmed near Dunbar until moving to farm at State Center in 1956 and then Marshalltown in 1979. Arnold retired from Fisher Controls after 22 years and was a member of the Iowa River Church of the Brethren and the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46. He treasured his family, dearly loved to fish, farm, take photos and collect pocketknives, hats and pens. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Janice, two children: Dale (Sharon) Olson of Monona, Iowa, Julie (Doug) Riley of Sate Center, grandchildren: Sarah Ann (Jason) Engler, Jennifer Lynn Olson, Sarah Lynn McGuire, Lori Beth Olson, Joshua J. Riley, Stacy Mae Bratzel and Brandon James Riley, great-granddaughter Grace Ann Engler and a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his parents, brothers Milo and Norman and sister Agnes Wignall.
