Barbara L. Ohrt, 83, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on November 18, 2020 at UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown with her daughters by her side. Services for Barbara will be held on Monday, November 23, 2020 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ in Marshalltown. Barbara Louise was born to parents Ford and Henrietta Fern (Woollard) Greenhow on February 16, 1937 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was raised by Fern and Merlin Kurth. She attended school in Marshalltown and graduated with the Class of 1955. She was united in marriage to Leonard Ohrt on February 26, 1956 at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Together they raised their five children on their acreage NW of Marshalltown. Barb worked for Hollingsworth Manufacturing for six years and KIOWA corporation for 14 years. Then, she worked as a caregiver and housekeeper until her retirement. She sold AVON for over 20 years. Barb was always busy and on the go. She was active at First United Church of Christ and was a board member there for several terms. She belonged to the Women’s Guild, Women of the Moose, Ridge Riders Saddle Club, Pony Express, the Marshalltown U.A.W. and some card clubs. She was a Cub Scout den mother and supported her children in their many endeavors. In her free time, she loved to be outside in her flower and vegetable gardens, doing her yard work and bird watching at home. With her family she was involved in anything horses (she especially loved Arabians) participating in horse shows and trail riding. She enjoyed attending and taking the children and grandchildren to various musical and theatrical events locally as well as in the Des Moines area. She also attended as many of their athletic events as possible. She enjoyed traveling all over the United States and across seas when she was able. Some highlights were to Germany, Alaska, and Hawaii with Leonard and to Venezuela as a family. She excelled at writing care notes and cards to friends and family and assisting the elderly. Barb is survived by her children Merlin Ohrt and his children Christina, Stacey, and Victoria, Roseann Nymeyer and her children Emily, Mark and Betsy, Mark (Bonnie) Ohrt and their children Casey and Wesley, Freeman (Pam) Ohrt and their children James, Rachelle, Freeman, Lucas and William, and Marcella (Charlie) Stewart and their children Stephannie, Shawn, Samantha, Amy and Theron; 33 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Michael (Wava) Kurth; sisters-in- law, Phyllis Wessely and Barbara J. Ohrt; numerous nieces and nephews; exchange students, Corky Balke and Pedro Colmenares; foster sister, Iona Borton Brown and Godchildren, Lori Brown Christopherson and Kevin Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard in 2013; her parents; and her brothers James and Steven Kurth.
