Bernadette Janie Dye Kriegel Janie Kriegel, 84, of 808 Christine Av. #106, Brookings, SD, died Friday evening, Oct. 3, at home with her family at her side. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday morning, Oct. 13, at 10:30 am at St. Marys Catholic Church in Marshalltown, IA., with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery at Laurel. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, with a Rosary Service to follow at 7pm. Memorials may be directed to the Brookings Hospice Program, In Care of the Brookings Health System. Mitchell Family Funeral Home 641-844-1234. Janie was born March 17, 1924 in Marshalltown, IA., to William and Mary (Roche) Curley, and lived with her family in Marshalltown, and a short time in Spencer, IA. She Graduated from St. Marys High School in Marshalltown in 1942. In February, 1942 she was married to Virgil C. Dye of Laurel, IA. They lived a short time in Baltimore, Md., and returned to Marshalltown following the war, where they made their home, and raised their family of three children. Virgil died in March of 1965. In Nov. 1969, she was married to Fred Fritz Kriegel. They lived in Marshalltown until they retired, and in 1989, they moved to Brookings, SD to be near her daughter and grandsons, who were her pride and joy. Janie was employed by Lennox Industries for a short time during WWII, and by Fisher Controls for 26 years, retiring in 1986 as Traffic Manager. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, and Brookings Hospital Auxiliary. She was a participant in the Cardiac Rehab Program, and RSVP Volunteers. She loved golfing,bowling, reading, and crocheting. She also enjoyed camping and boating, and for many years some of her happiest times were spent aboard the Janie K. In their later years she and Fritz spent their winters in the warmth and sunshine of Apache Junction, AZ. She treasured her family, and taught us much about how to be a strong and loving person. She will be greatly missed. In her last months she was cared for at home by her daughter, and the Brookings Health System Hospice Program, with very special caregivers, Deb Prodoehl and Julie Henry. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marcy and Greg Woody Sherwood of Volga, SD, and two beloved grandsons, JJ Workman and Philip Workman, both of Sioux Falls, SD. Also 2 sisters, Francis Sis Jamell of Marshalltown, and Helen Quigley of Iowa City, IA, and 5 other grandchildren, Richard C. Guthrie, and J. Stacy Burns, both of Arkansas, Charles E. Dye, Oregon, Erica S. Dye, Atlanta, Ga., Rebecca M. Dye, Ohio, 2 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and very dear friends Ken and Mary Surber, Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, both of her husbands, a daughter, Sandra Guthrie Burns, a son, John C. Dye, a brother William Curley, and sisters Mary Good, Jo Lovig, Ada Elliott, and Winnie Barker, and several brothers-in-law.
