Betty Jacobs

Betty L. Jacobs, age 98, of Marshalltown, Iowa entered into the gates of heaven and rejoined her husband and son on the morning of July 17, 2026 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services for Betty will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Betty will be laid to rest at the Conrad Cemetery. Those in attendance to services are encouraged to come dressed in casual attire. In lieu of flowers, memorials/donations in Betty’s name may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or to the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown. Betty Louise Cupp was born on December 31, 1927 in Keota, Iowa. She was the second of five girls born to Glenn and Gayle (Ginther) Cupp. Betty grew up on farms between Keota and Welman. She attended school in Keota and was a member of the high school marching band after wanting to join so bad she took up the only instrument left, the tuba, though she was barely 5’1” tall. Betty graduated from Keota High School in 1946.

Betty furthered her education and attended nursing school in Iowa City Mercy College. It was at this time that she met Edward L. Jacobs, a medical student during a time he was serving a rotation at the hospital. On June 6, 1948 Betty married the love of her life, Dr. Edward L. Jacobs in her hometown of Keota, Iowa. After their wedding, they moved to Spokane, Washington while Edward was completing his medical internship and serving in the United States Navy, then United States Army as part of his internship. While in Spokane, Betty and Edward welcomed their first child, Doug. When Edward was called to serve overseas, Betty moved back to Keota along with their son, Doug, where they had an apartment. In 1952, Edward returned home from service and the family moved to Conrad, Iowa, to start his first medical practice. Once there, they grew their family adding two additional sons, Craig and Thomas. Betty remained dedicated to her family and loved being a mom and caregiver for others. In 1962, they moved again and called Marshalltown their forever home.

Betty was a member of the First Methodist Church in Conrad while they lived there, then became a member of the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown after they moved there. In her free time, Betty enjoyed working in her garden, and canning the produce from it, baking (the cookie jar was never empty), and was known to be a voracious reader, enjoying her time “traveling through books”. She will always be remembered for how devoted she was to family and friends, her willingness to lend a hand to others and the ability to create a calming presence and bring an immediate peace you felt whenever you entered her home.

Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Doug Jacobs and Craig Jacobs; two grandchildren, Carrie (Robert) Hamlin and Andrew (Trish) Jacobs; five great-grandchildren, Drew, Linden, Campbell, Rylan and Ellory Jacobs. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Connie Mangold; numerous nieces and nephews; and Robert Weeces who she treated like, and considered to be, another son.

In eternal life she rejoins her husband, Dr. Edward L. Jacobs; son, Thomas Jacobs; parents, Glenn and Gayle Cupp and three sisters, Maxine, Rosie and Shirley.
