Betty Sue Turner, 77, of Marshalltown, passed away Saturday, Febuary 12, 2022, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. To honor her and her family’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and the family and friends are invited to a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21st at the Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Nurses Foundation, 2400 – 86th Street, Urbandale, IA 50322. Betty Sue (Figland) Turner was born July 8, 1944, in Montezuma, Iowa to Chester and Margaret (Graham) Figland. She grew up with seven siblings on a farm near Searsboro, Iowa. She attended Searsboro schools through tenth grade, which consolidated thereafter, graduating from Lynnville-Sully High School. She entered nursing education in the fall of 1962 at Evangelical School for Nurses in Marshalltown, Iowa. After graduation in May, 1965, she worked at Evangelical Hospital. After meeting on a blind date, she married her husband, James Leroy Turner, Sr. on July 31, 1966. Betty left nursing in 1967, to raise their three children. She returned to nursing at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in 1978, where she worked for the next 29 years, retiring in December, 2007. Betty is survived by three children; Jennifer (Leroy) Himes of Marshalltown; James Leroy (Jeanne) Turner of Marion, Iowa; and Terri Turner of Marshalltown. Betty had seven grandchildren: Daniel Counts of Marshalltown; Gary (Kimberly) Counts of Newton; Hannah Himes of Marshalltown; Shelby (Ryan) Butcher of Marshalltown; Page Shattuck of Marshalltown; and Tiffany and Ozzy Smith of Marshalltown. In addition, Betty had seven great-grandchildren: Eli and Noah Butcher; Summer, Nathan, and Victoria Counts; Brooklyn Miller; and Blake Dupee. Other survivors included: brother David (Portia) Figland of Oskaloosa; sister-in-law Linda (Figland) Goemaat; and brother-in- law Jerry (Kathy) Turner; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Margaret Figland; her loving husband James Leroy Turner Sr.; and six siblings: Charles Thomas (infant), Margaret Watt, Sheldon Figland, Grace Hoover, Chester Figland, and Mary Stevens.
