Beverly Benander Romer

The kind spirit of Beverly Benander-Romer, age 98, of Marshalltown, departed this earthly life to rejoin so many that have gone on before. Beverly passed away on Friday, January 30, 2015, at the Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2015, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac, Michigan. Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the services. Memorials in her memory may be directed to the Iowa Department of the Blind Lending Library. Born at home near Welton, Iowa, on November 1, 1916, Beverly was the daughter of Floyd and Maureen (Anderson) Brooks. She rode a horse-drawn school bus to school in younger years and was passionate about the profession of teaching. She received her teachers degree from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls (now UNI), and began teaching in Baldwin, Iowa. There, she met a prestigious young man, the superintendent of schools, Carl E. Benander. The two were united in marriage on November 24, 1938, in Clinton, Iowa. He received his pastoral calling on his mothers death bed and followed in the ministry. They ministered in many communities from as far west as Idaho, and Michigan and Iowa. Reverend Benander preceded her in death in 1987. Beverly was blessed with the re-acquaintance of a boyfriend, Dillon Romer, she had many years ago, but parted. The two of them were married on January 16, 2000, in Florida. They resided at Maquoketa until his passing in 2010. Beverly enjoyed church-work, animals, playing bingo, and doing crafts. Left to cherish Beverlys life are her children: Carlene (Jon) Stamp of Rockford, Michigan; Larry (Sharen) Benander of Marshalltown, Iowa; and Stan (Sheri) Benander of Cadillac, Michigan; foster daughter, Marilyn (Keith) Hultquist of Muscatine, Iowa; ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and her sister-in-law, Jeanne Brooks. In death, Beverly rejoined her husbands; her parents; twin granddaughters, Julie M. and Beverly I. Benander; son, Carl D. Benander, in 2010; brother, Ralph I. Brooks; and granddaughter-in-law, Tina Ann Stamp, in 2014.
